European Studies and Research in Adult Learning and Education

Redesigning the existing European Master in Adult Education making higher education more open and accessible by validation (assessment) of relevant kinds of learning outcomes/VNIL, making curricula more flexible, designing modules on VPL, assessment, counselling, self-management of competencies.

The project aims:

  • Develop a joint research and PhD programme in ALE (Adult Learning and Education), leading to a mutual degree at EQF level 8 and redesigning the existing EMAE programme (European Master in Adult Education), including teaching/learning materials; platform for exchange and collaboration;
  • Foster the European dimension in study and research of
  • Develop a model to assist in making higher education more open and accessible by validation (assessment) of relevant kinds of learning outcomes/VPL, flexibilising curricula, modules on VPL, assessment, counselling, self-management of

Specific tasks and outcomes include:

  • Teaching/learning materials (e.g. publications on research topics like comparative research), an online learning and communication platform to support exchange and collaboration (e.g. joint project work) among students and teachers across
  • Physical mobility arrangements for teachers and students (e.g. joint summer camps linked with research workshops), to promote both their scientific and intercultural
  • Language support for students and staff to promote their proficiency in English and to develop an understanding of key terms of ALE in other
  • Reflecting and working on European research questions like EU-Statistics, EU-Benchmarks, best practices, common questions like aging, literacy,
  • Bringing together research partners from various European countries to carry out common work and internationalizing scientific literature and findings in

The interests and needs of three main groups

  • Practitioners (adult educators, assessors, counsellors and managers and programme planners in adult education, and lecturers/researchers at universities)
  • Graduates wanting to continue their studies in research contexts, or to gain a PhD-degree
  • Early Career researchers in lifelong learning, to benefit from European/international
